The 2-3-1 formation consists of two defenders, a central trio comprising one defensive midfielder and two wide midfielders, and a solitary striker. It creates a strong diamond shape across the pitch, which is essential for maintaining passing triangles and controlling the game's tempo.
This system allows teams to defend in a solid block of two while providing enough width through the wingers to stretch the opponent. The lone central midfielder acts as the engine room, distributing play between the solid defensive foundation and the attacking forward.
Use this formation when your team has technically proficient midfielders capable of retaining possession and controlling the tempo of the game. It is ideal against teams that lack a clear midfield structure, allowing you to dominate the central diamond and force them onto the back foot.
To counter a 2-3-1, use a 3-2-1 formation to match up numerically in defence and midfield. By pushing your full-backs or wing-backs high, you can exploit the space behind the opposing wide midfielders, forcing their back-two to deal with 2-v-1 situations on the flanks.
Not necessarily; if your wide midfielders have high attacking output, it effectively becomes a 2-1-3, offering plenty of goal-scoring potential.
Instruct your central midfielder to push forward into the 'number 10' position during attacks, or encourage your wide midfielders to tuck in when the ball reaches the final third.
Because the 2-3-1 relies on these players for both attacking width and defensive tracking, constant rotation or high aerobic fitness is required to prevent the formation from collapsing.
While you can, it makes the defence highly vulnerable to central counters; keeping the central pivot is the key to this formation's balance.
