This formation utilises a 'flat' five at the back, two central midfielders acting as a double pivot, and two attacking midfielders supporting a lone striker. The system aims to saturate the defensive third, making it extremely difficult for opponents to play through the middle.
Offensively, the width is provided almost exclusively by the wing-backs. This allows the two attacking midfielders to occupy the 'half-spaces' or drift inside to create numerical superiorities in the final third, feeding the central forward who remains the primary focal point.
Ideally suited for matches where you are the underdog or need to defend a narrow lead. It is effective on larger small-sided pitches where there is enough room for wing-backs to exploit the flanks on the break.
The 5-2-2 is best countered by formations that use high, wide wingers to pull the wing-backs out of position, or by a 3-man midfield that can outnumber the double pivot and dominate the ball.
The 5-2-2 trades a central midfielder for an extra attacking playmaker, offering more creative options in the final third but less control in the centre.
While it looks defensive on paper, active wing-backs and two attacking midfielders can make it a potent counter-attacking system.
They require elite stamina and crossing ability, as they are the only players providing width in both defence and attack.
Yes, if the central midfielders are being overrun, one '10' should drop back to create a 5-3-1-1 shape defensively.
