What is the 1?

In the 1 formation, the team is fundamentally unbalanced, focusing almost entirely on the capabilities of the lone outfield player. The goalkeeper remains restricted to the penalty area, while the outfield player is tasked with bridging the gap between defense and attack in a high-intensity, physical environment.

Because there is only one outfield player, this formation creates a massive defensive vulnerability if the player pushes too far forward. It requires exceptional aerobic fitness and individual ball-carrying ability from the outfield player to manage both transition phases effectively under pressure.

When to use the 1

Use this formation only when you are severely shorthanded, or when playing against a significantly stronger opponent where securing a clean sheet is the absolute priority over scoring.

How to play against the 1

Counter this formation by stretching the pitch wide and using quick passing exchanges to drag the lone outfield player out of position, creating an easy path to goal for the opposing numerical advantage.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 1 formation viable for competitive play?

No, it is highly inefficient for competitive soccer as it lacks basic positional balance.

How does the outfield player manage fatigue?

The player must adopt a conservative, reactive defensive style rather than constantly pressing.

Can the goalkeeper contribute offensively?

Only through long, accurate distribution to the outfield player; they cannot leave their line safely.

What is the biggest risk with this formation?

The isolation of the outfield player, who can be easily double-teamed by any opponent with two attackers.
