What is the 1-1?

In a 1-1 formation, the team is split vertically into a dedicated defensive anchor and a singular forward presence. The goalkeeper acts as the third player, often needing to push high up the pitch to support the defender.

This setup relies heavily on the individual quality of the players, as there is little room for covering mistakes. The formation is most common in very small competitive matches where space is extremely limited and individual duels are frequent.

Strengths

  • Simple tactical instructions
  • Clear separation of duties
  • Effective at forcing 1v1 duels
  • Minimizes defensive confusion

Weaknesses

  • Vulnerable to 2v1 overloads
  • Easily bypassed by quick passing
  • Leaves large gaps in midfield
  • Forward becomes isolated easily

Player roles

  • GoalkeeperMust act as a sweeper-keeper, actively engaging in build-up play and covering space behind the defender.
  • DefenderTasked with holding the fort alone, requiring high concentration and the ability to win individual challenges.
  • AttackerExpected to operate as a lone target man, holding up the ball while waiting for defensive support to move up.

When to use the 1-1

This formation is best used when your team has two dominant individuals who can handle the entire pitch themselves, or when playing against an inferior team where individual skill is enough to win duels.

How to play against the 1-1

The best way to counter a 1-1 is to push both field players forward simultaneously to create a 2v1 situation against the lone defender, forcing the goalkeeper to leave their line.

Frequently asked questions

Should the goalkeeper stay in the goal?

No, in a 1-1 the goalkeeper must participate in outfield play to prevent the opposing forward from having an easy 2v1 against your defender.

How does the attacker help defensively?

The attacker must work back to cut off passing lanes, otherwise the defender will be constantly overwhelmed by the opposition.

Is the 1-1 formation good for beginners?

It is excellent for beginners because the roles are very clearly defined, allowing players to focus on basic defensive and attacking duties.

What happens if the defender is beaten?

The goalkeeper must be ready to rush out to narrow the angle or clear the ball, as there is no second defender to provide cover.
